The third annual Eatn, Singn and History Festival kicks off at 11 a.m. May 20 at the historic Horner School, also known as the Central West Virginia Genealogy and History Library, located just off of Corridor H at Horner.
Just as the name implies, the day is chockfull of eating, singing and history. In addition to a full slate a music and history, vendors will offer a variety of foods including a beans and corn bread dinner, strawberry shortcake, hot dogs and more. Two special events highlight the afternoons entertainment.
The Chicken Wing Eatn Contest, sponsored by KFC, begins at 1 p.m. Contestants are judged on the number of chicken wings they eat.
The Ugliest Person Contest follows immediately after the chicken eating contest. The only rule for contestants is that there are no rules. Ugly can be real or implied, created by
nature, make-up or mask; it might even be an ugly personality.
Prizes for each contest are $98 gold dollars for first place, $9.80 for second place and and 98 cents for third place. The judges decisions are final.
Registration begins at 11 a.m. for both contests; registration fee for each is $10. Proceeds from these events benefit the Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants.
Don Detamore and Steve Peters, the Stalnaker Family, Betty Jo and the Countryairs, and ETA are the days featured musicians. Local historian and storyteller Joy Gilchrist-Stalnaker will share stories of pioneer times in Central West Virginia.
Admission and parking are free. Those attending may bring their lawn chairs and claim their spots under the tents or in the shade of the trees on the grounds of the Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants (Horner School).
